Come meet a Marchador!

Are you looking for that child-safe pleasure horse? Or how about a husband horse? Not ready to give up riding your performance sport, but ready to have more comfort in your mount?   Come meet the Mangalarga Marchador!   

The Marchador (MARCH A DOOR) horse is all those things because of its willing nature, smooth gaits and athletic versatility. Bred for centuries to be sound and square, with good bones, you can be part of beginning the new traditions here. Oh, and the added benefit? They have that Iberian beauty and soft, kind eye. You know you have a good horse the minute you lay eyes on one!

The USMMA was founded in 2005 as the official association and registry for the Marchador breed in North America. The USMMA is affiliated with and recognized by the Associacaon Brasileira dos Criadores do Cavalo Mangalarga Marchador (ABCCMM), the Brazilian organization founded to preserve, regulate and register the unique bloodlines of this magnificent breed. 

In Brazil, Mangalarga Marchadors must pass rigid standards for conformation, gait, performance and endurance. Often, the North American Marchador horses maintain this dual registry with the ABCCMM in Brazil and the 2 associations work together to share information to help in registrations.

Meet a Marchador program

The incredible Marchador

Francisco Gabriel Junqueira, Baron of Alfenas, began breeding his imported Lusitano to the mares on his farm (primarily Barbs, along with other breeds brought to Brazil when it was colonized). The result was a smooth-gaited, attractive horse which the baron called Sublime.

Junqueira sold some of the Sublimes to a friend who had a farm in Paty do Alferes, Rio de Janeiro. The farm's name was Mangalarga, and the owner rode Sublimes to and from Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, people noticed the smooth-gaited, attractive Sublimes and began calling them Mangalargas. Breeders and researchers note that until at least 1910, most ranchers involved in the breed's development (especially Junqueira Family members) followed the baron's recommendations to fix the breed's marching gait, hardiness, endurance, health and temperament.
